What is culture? For me, it is the modes of behavior that help a group thrive in a given environment. BlackAsiaMagazine.com is a website that peers into the lives of people from the African diaspora, living in Asia. We look at the cultures that exist here. We report on the culture that is, right now, taking shape.

Although a large part of our audience is black travelers, they are not truly our target demographic. We address the concerns of black people who live in Asia. Black people in Asia come from a myriad of backgrounds. Many of us are English teachers from the United States or the UK. Some of us are small business owners from Cameroon or Liberia. Some of us are refugees who are fleeing from some very troubled parts of the world. Black people in Asia present a wide array of talents, skills, educational backgrounds, economic situations and life experiencesBlack communities here are in their earliest stages of development.

For us, the unique thing about living in Asia is that we are mostly unknown to these societies. People who look like us have lived in Asia since ancient times. However, black people who come from Asia are a new entity. There are stereotypes to content with but, on the whole, these societies don’t know us. This is something truly great. It means that black people have the chance to be more successful than we’ve been in any other part of the world.

We are in the business of building communities. The best way to do that is by creating and maintaining a dialogue among the different aspects of this group. We offer education, promote forms of culture and work out solutions to the common problems that are coming up for African people living in Asia.

With these many differences, as one scholar put it “I am more interested in what brings us together than what keeps us apart.” We look at what is. By our will, we shape what is yet to be for the generations coming after us.
